In many ways, tradition has taught us what this word means. We sit quietly with heads bowed and hands folded. Patiently, we bring our long lists of problems and issues to the Lord, as if He does not know them already. Then we hope against hope that He might actually do something to help our desperate situation. Is this truly how God would want us to deal with the challenges we face?
When I spend time with my earthly father, hours are spent talking, walking and just being together. I do not sit down, give him a list of problems and then leave. That would not make for much of a relationship! Why would we think that our heavenly Father would want to relate with us any differently?
When God created Adam and Eve, it was for relationship. When Adam was walking in the cool of garden, he was not giving a list of problems from the day. Sin had yet to enter the picture. He did not have financial problems or health issues. He was just talking with God.
As I began to search out the life of Jesus, I could not find one example where he asked his Father to deal with any issue he faced. Often he went out and spent time with his Father. Yet whenever he faced issues he dealt with them head on.
May I suggest to you, a different approach to prayer. When I talk with my heavenly Father, I raise my hands in praise and thanksgiving. Having spent time in relationship with my Father, and in His Word, I come to know His will. Then when I turn to the issues in front of me, I speak to them with authority. I have full confidence that my Father is backing up whatever I say!
Mark 11:23 says, “For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.”
